Painted in Photoshop.
This creature was done for San Diego’s Zoo in California.
I invested most of the time on the Gryphon, as it is the main picture’s subject. The stones have been roughly painted then textured.
As references for the Gryphon I used some photos I took from lions and eagles at the zoo. That was helpful for the position of the animal and details such as fur and feathers. I thought it would be nice to add some peacock’s feathers and used some references of crocodile’s skin texture on the two front legs.
I had a lot of work regarding the feathers that I’ve added almost one by one, did spin them in all directions, changed their sizes, shapes, colors, lighting, then painted over again with the wacom-pen. I worked the same way for the fur.
